The Buildhub PileGrout Piling Cement is formulated for the specific technical requirements of bored and continuous flight auger (CFA) piling concrete — an application that presents unique challenges for cement performance that standard structural concrete cements do not fully address. Piling concrete is placed in a fundamentally different environment to above-ground structural concrete: it is tremied or pumped into a bored hole through the full height of the pile in a single operation, it must flow without vibration compaction in a confined bore often containing groundwater or drilling fluid, it must resist bleed water separation that would create weak water-rich zones in the pile shaft, and it must develop full strength without defect despite being placed without any ability for post-placement inspection or rectification.
PileGrout’s cement chemistry is specifically optimized for the cohesive fine-grained ground conditions — London Clay, Oxford Clay, glacial till, and similar plastic cohesive soils — that make up the majority of UK piling environments. The C3S/C2S mineral ratio controls the hydration exotherm profile and the rate of internal bleed water generation, both of which are critical parameters for pile concrete quality in cohesive ground conditions where the pile bore is temporarily unsupported by casing during concrete placement.
The bleed water resistance of PileGrout is achieved through its specific particle size distribution and the compatibility of its chemistry with the viscosity-modifying admixtures and set retarders used in piling concrete mixes to maintain workability through the placement window of large-diameter deep piles. Buildhub provides dedicated mix design support services for piling contractors specifying PileGrout for specific pile geometry and ground condition combinations.
PileGrout is supplied in 50kg bags and bulk tanker for supply to piling plant batching facilities. Third-party pile integrity testing data from CFA and bored pile programmes using PileGrout is available from Buildhub on request.
