The Buildhub MasterBlend Blended Fly Ash Cement represents the intelligent intersection of structural performance and sustainable construction practice. By replacing 30% of Portland clinker with carefully selected, quality-controlled pulverised fly ash (PFA) sourced from UK power generation facilities, MasterBlend delivers a cement with a significantly lower carbon footprint per tonne than equivalent pure Portland products without sacrificing the 28-day strength performance that structural applications demand.
The inclusion of 30% PFA produces a cement with a markedly lower heat of hydration compared to standard OPC — a critical advantage in mass concrete pours such as raft foundations, dam construction, large pier bases, and thick retaining walls where the temperature differentials caused by high heat of hydration in pure Portland cements can lead to thermal cracking that compromises structural integrity. MasterBlend’s reduced peak temperature profile significantly lowers this risk in sections thicker than 500mm.
Beyond thermal performance, the pozzolanic reaction of PFA with calcium hydroxide released during Portland clinker hydration produces additional calcium silicate hydrate binder that densifies the concrete microstructure over time, improving long-term strength development, reducing water permeability, and enhancing resistance to sulphate attack and chloride penetration. These characteristics make MasterBlend an excellent choice for marine structures, water-retaining structures, bridge abutments, and any concrete element with significant long-term durability requirements.
MasterBlend conforms to EN 197-1 CEM II/B-V classification and carries CE marking. Buildhub supplies MasterBlend in 50kg bags and bulk 1-tonne flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs) for high-volume site applications.
