The Buildhub PoolShell Swimming Pool Cement is a specialist formulation developed specifically for the permanently wet, chlorine-rich, and UV-exposed environment that swimming pool shells experience throughout their service life. Standard Portland cement concrete deteriorates in swimming pool environments through multiple mechanisms — chloride penetration to reinforcement causes corrosion-induced spalling, prolonged water contact causes progressive calcium leaching that weakens the cement matrix, and the combination of UV exposure and thermal cycling stresses the surface plaster layer in outdoor pools. PoolShell’s formulation addresses each of these mechanisms.
Chlorine resistance in PoolShell is achieved through a combination of low water-to-cement ratio capability (facilitated by a factory-incorporated superplasticiser that reduces the mixing water requirement), supplementary cementitious materials that densify the concrete microstructure, and a specifically selected C3A content that minimizes the formation of chloro-aluminate phases that accelerate chloride-induced reinforcement corrosion. This chemistry produces a pool shell concrete with measurably lower chloride diffusion coefficient than standard concrete mixes — extending the design service life of the reinforced pool shell significantly.
The smooth surface finish characteristics of PoolShell are important for both the plaster and tile finishes applied over the shell and for the direct-finish shotcrete pool shells where the cement paste surface quality directly determines the tactile quality of the pool interior. PoolShell’s high fineness and consistent particle form produce a surface that is visually smooth and free from the bleed water pitting that affects coarser-ground cement systems.
PoolShell is suitable for new-build pool shell construction in cast concrete and shotcrete, renovation of existing pool shells requiring re-rendering or re-plastering, and water feature construction. Full technical support for pool structural design and specification is available from Buildhub’s civil engineering team.
