The Buildhub SlagMax GGBS Blended Cement combines high-quality Portland clinker with 40% ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) to produce a cement that outperforms pure Portland cement in virtually every durability category that matters in aggressive exposure conditions. GGBS is a latent hydraulic binder that activates in the presence of the calcium hydroxide released by Portland clinker hydration, producing a dense, low-permeability microstructure that is highly resistant to the penetration of aggressive ions including sulphates, chlorides, and carbonates.
For structures built in Class XA sulphate-bearing ground, coastal and marine environments with chloride exposure, or aggressive industrial environments with chemical exposure, SlagMax provides a level of chemical resistance that standard Portland cement cannot match without supplementary protective measures. The low permeability of GGBS-blended concrete also significantly reduces the rate of carbonation-induced reinforcement corrosion — extending the design service life of reinforced concrete structures exposed to aggressive environments.
SlagMax’s 40% GGBS content also delivers a meaningfully lower embodied carbon footprint compared to pure Portland cement — a consideration of growing importance in construction specifications where sustainability metrics are embedded in contract requirements. GGBS is a by-product of the steel manufacturing process, and its use as a cement replacement displaces the high-energy Portland clinker production that accounts for the majority of concrete’s embodied carbon.
Buildhub SlagMax meets EN 197-1 CEM III/A classification and is certified to the full suite of durability testing requirements. Available in 50kg bags and 1-tonne FIBC bulk bags. Technical support for mix design optimization in specific exposure conditions is available from Buildhub’s materials engineering team.
