The Buildhub DustShield Cement Dust Suppressant is a purpose-developed water-based surface treatment designed to reduce the generation of respirable cement and concrete dust during the handling, loading, cutting, and breaking activities that generate the highest dust exposure levels on construction sites. Cement dust exposure is a significant occupational health concern — respirable crystalline silica (RCS) from sand and aggregate components of cement mortars and concretes is classified as a Class 1 carcinogen by IARC, and portland cement dust causes occupational asthma through its alkaline sensitizing properties. DustShield addresses the primary dust generation points where engineering controls can most effectively reduce worker exposure.
DustShield works by forming a temporary polymeric surface crust on cement and concrete products when applied by spray, binding surface particles together and preventing the generation of fine airborne dust during handling. The crust is semi-rigid when dry and sufficient to reduce fugitive dust generation during normal loading, transport, and unloading operations, but breaks down readily under the mechanical forces applied during demolition, cutting, and breaking — ensuring it does not interfere with the actual work process.
The product is specifically formulated to be non-staining on standard grey and white cement and concrete surfaces, fully water-dilutable for spray application, and biodegradable with no residual soil contamination risk in standard application scenarios. It is applied at a dilution of 1:3 to 1:5 with water and can be applied by hand-held garden pump sprayer, backpack sprayer, or vehicle-mounted spray bar systems.
DustShield is compatible with all Buildhub cement product bags as a pre-slit treatment during storage in exposed areas, and is used by demolition contractors as a pre-treatment for concrete structures to be broken out, reducing RCS exposure during breaking operations.
