The Buildhub AquaShield Waterproof Cement eliminates the need for externally applied waterproofing membranes in a wide range of applications by incorporating hydrophobic and crystalline waterproofing admixtures directly into the cement during manufacturing. This factory-blending approach ensures consistent, uniform admixture distribution throughout the cement — an outcome that is impossible to achieve reliably with site-added waterproofing powders or liquids added to standard cement.
AquaShield’s integral waterproofing system works through a dual mechanism: hydrophobic admixtures line the capillary pores of the hardened cement paste with water-repelling molecular chains that prevent water ingress under moderate hydrostatic pressure, while crystalline components react with water and free calcium ions to form insoluble calcium silicate crystals that physically block capillary pathways in the hardened matrix. This crystalline mechanism is self-sealing — if hairline cracks develop, exposure to water reactivates crystal growth that progressively seals the crack without intervention.
Primary applications include basement and cellar floor and wall tanking, swimming pool shells, ornamental water features, planter boxes and garden walls, wet room substrates, bridge deck waterproofing, and retaining walls in contact with groundwater. AquaShield produces concrete and mortars that exceed the water penetration depth requirements of EN 12390-8 at standard water-to-cement ratios, making it a practical and reliable waterproofing solution without the cost and complexity of membrane application.
Buildhub AquaShield is supplied in 25kg bags with detailed mix design guidance for concrete, render, and mortar applications included on the packaging and downloadable from the Buildhub technical data library.
